On Saturday, April 2, Harris County ESD 48 Fire Department had the pleasure of participating in a wonderful community outreach event at Golbow Elementary. The goal was to provide health and safety information to our Katy students and their families. Some of our partners in this event were Texas Children’s Hospital, Times Square Entertainment, Gulf Coast Blood Center, Sprouts, Typhoon Texas, Sphier Emergency Room, Bahama Bucks, YMCA, and much more.
Golbow’s event was from 10am – 1pm and visitors were invited to tour the department’s Engine 3, Medic 4 and our new Booster 5. Not only were the children able to get behind the wheel of these exciting vehicles, but they were able to watch and even participate in demonstrations of the equipment they carry and how they function. They tried on bunker gear (heavy protective clothing) on Engine 3 and looked on as the loading system on Medic 4 raised and lowered a stretcher into and out of the back of the ambulance. At Booster 5 (a light fire truck with off-road capabilities) the students got to see the built in bumper nozzles spray and were even given the chance to try out a real fire hose!
While our firefighters and medics showed everyone around outside, our community team members were busy taking pictures and making sure everyone went home with educational packets, coloring books and junior-sized fire helmets.
It was rewarding to know that without any discussion amongst our team, almost every member of our HCESD 48 contingent participated in the blood drive at the event! Check out the event photos on our Harris County ESD 48 Facebook page (here) and give it a like if you haven’t already. As always, please share our post if you enjoyed it so that others in the community know that we are here to serve and would love to attend more events like this in the future.
